Townsville students set for gruelling 350km bike ride

Students at Heatley Secondary College are about to embark on the journey of their lives. This July an enthusiastic group of ten students from Townsville are set to participate in a demanding three day bike tour which will take them across the terrain from Townsville to Cairns. This ambitious venture is kick-started by generous donations which will assist the school in acquiring much needed equipment, including 10 road bikes that will enable the selected 2012 students and future participants to contend in this annual event.

NSS regional Queensland’s premier stevedoring, transport and logistics provider is committed to the support of youths in local communities. Consequently NSS recognise that it is imperative to ensure that these ten students from Heatley Secondary College are given a fighting chance in training towards what looks to be no easy feat.

NSS has led the charge in getting the students on the road, donating a generous $1,500.00 to the cause. The company wishes to promote awareness amongst local youths regarding the positive impact that physical activity has on teenagers, helping them to develop personally whilst providing them with an outlet in which to escape from the pressures of everyday life, building self-confidence and a sense of achievement. The students will initiate their training during their lunch breaks and as the school term progresses, they will move on to participate in official road training events organised by the Townsville to Cairns bike ride committee.

NSS’ commitment to the development of youths in regional Queensland and the sheer enthusiasm of the ten Heatley Secondary College students brings together a winning combination of enthusiastic individuals, who seek to make a difference in 2012.
